Chapter & Verse started with a simple conviction: the person behind the counter should have actually read the books they're recommending. In a world of algorithms that suggest forty-seven more thrillers because you liked one thing about unreliable narrators, we believed someone should ask three questions and hand you something you didn't know you needed.

We opened our doors in 2019 on a quiet street in Portland's Pearl District. No neon signs, no discount bins by the entrance. Just shelves curated by people who read widely and think carefully about what deserves a place in your life.

Every book here earned its spot. We don't carry everything — we carry the right things. And if you walk in not knowing what you want, that's our favorite kind of visit. Because the best recommendations aren't products of an algorithm. They're conversations between two people who care about the same thing: finding the right book for the right reader.
